How SEO Works

Getting Indexed by Search Engines

In order for your web site to be indexed by the top search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo, web crawlers are used to spider continuously through web content. These crawlers index every page's information to be used in their search results algorithm. Web sites found in this manner are recorded making it unnecessary to submit the web sites directly to the search engines. Not all pages are found and indexed by the major search engines, however. Many factors may contribute to this happening including pages that are over a certain number of clicks away from the site's root directory.

Search engines offer many ways of submitting web sites to be crawled and increasing the likelihood of the page getting indexed. Yahoo provides a domain name submission service that guarantees crawling, but they charge a fee. The service does not include any guarantee that the website with become a top search result. Other major website directories also require manual submission and sometimes editorial review by actual human eyes. Another method that ensures that a web page will be indexed is available through Google Webmaster Tools. Google allows the free creation and submission of an XML sitemap, helping search engines discover and index content more quickly and efficiently.

Increasing Search Result Ranking

Various techniques can be implemented to boost the ranking of a website in the search engine results.  Some of these are more advanced and involved than others. But the bottom line remains: higher ranking in the search results leads to greater website traffic.  When people type in a search phrase in Google, they are shown a page with ten organic search results.  It is this list of web sites that harness almost all of the traffic for that search phrase.  In fact, the higher up in that list of ten that your web site appears, the more traffic your site will get.  So it's extremely important that your web site not only appears in the front page of Google search results for your most important keywords, but it needs to be as high up as possible to really bring in the potential customers which will eventually become your clients.

Keywords found in a website's content by the crawlers play a huge role in how that particular site is indexed. A legal website must have the relevant keywords for a search engine to classify it as a website that has anything to do with legal matters. A wide range of relevant keywords and phrases located throughout your content helps the site come up in the top of the search rankings for your range of relevant search queries. These keywords should be located in the content as well as within the page's title and meta tags to boost the search rankings the most.  It is crucial that a search engine optimization expert handle such technical tactics as meta tag and title tag data.

Increasing the number of links pointing to a website, also called link building, also helps increase a website's visibility and search engine reputation, and in turn the traffic it receives. The search engines employ a link analysis process in order to determine a particular website's value. A website that has many similar websites linking to it is considered a more trusted than one with no links to it. In addition, not just any link will do. The quality of the linking site is important. A link from a major website that has been trusted for years will be weighted a lot more heavily than one that was just created yesterday so is an excellent SEO marketing for law firms strategy.
